HAMILTON ROAD BRIDGE CLOSURE
LOUISA, VIRGINIA – The Hamilton Road (Route 695) Bridge over the South Anna River in Louisa County’s Green Springs Historic District will close to all traffic beginning Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Vehicles are encouraged to detour on E Jack Jouett Road (Route 640) or Poindexter Road (Route 613) while the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) establishes a signed detour route that avoids all reduced-weight structures.
VDOT has a robust bridge inspection and safety program that exceeds federal requirements. Historic bridges, like the Hamilton Road Bridge, are inspected frequently due to concerns with age, and if an inspector finds safety or structural issues, VDOT will take immediate action to limit or restrict traffic. An inspection of the Hamilton Road Bridge revealed significant deterioration to one of the beams that support the deck, resulting in the closure.
VDOT bridge engineers are developing a plan to repair the bridge beam but the extent of necessary repairs, the cost or the time to complete them is not known. Even after repairs the bridge will be posted for a severely reduced weight limit. Approximately 58 vehicles cross the bridge each day, according to the most recent traffic counts.
Louisa County shares VDOT’s commitment to the safety of Louisa County citizens and those travelling our roads. The County encourages citizens to follow road closure alerts in the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office app, sign up for urgent notifications through louisacounty.gov, and check social media for updates.
