History
Major Ronnie Roberts is the Chief Deputy of the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office. He was appointed by Sheriff Lowe on January 1st, 2020. Major Roberts has an illustrious career, having more than 45 years of law enforcement experience.
Ronnie Roberts, being an avid history buff, is quick to state that his family is originally from Louisa County. Ronnie Roberts’ grandfather lived in the Town of Mineral, before moving to Albemarle County to work at the University of Virginia. Ronnie Roberts grew up working on family farms in Albemarle County.
Work in Law Enforcement
He started his career in 1974, as many do in law enforcement as a Communications Officer for the Charlottesville Police Department. After working for two years he was promoted to a police officer in 1976 and began working as a district officer on patrol. In 1988, Officer Roberts was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned as the supervisor of the CPD Traffic Unit, where he worked as an investigator handling and coordinating fatal motor vehicle crashes and directing responses to known neighborhood traffic problems.
In 2005 Sgt. Roberts was promoted to rank of Lieutenant and was assigned back to the patrol division, managing the day to day operation of the patrol shifts. Then in 2010, Lt. Roberts was transferred to the Neighborhood Service Bureau, which handled the Community Policing Unit, and other community programs like the School Resource Officer Program, Traffic Unit, and Media Relations as the Public Information Officer. In October of 2014, Lt. Roberts retired with 40 years of service.
In October of 2014 Ronnie Roberts accepted the position as Chief of Police in the Town of Louisa where he worked within the guidelines of 21st Century Community Policing approach, building relationships between officers, the people and businesses within the community. On Jan 1st, 2020 Ronnie Roberts accepted the position and was appointed to the Chief Deputy with the rank of Major.
